Ikenobo California Pacific Chapter collaborated with the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) and Ikebana International New York Chapter to invite immediate past chapter president Joseph Lam to demonstrate Ikenobo ikebana at the Ross Hall at NYBG in October 6, 2022.

The event was blessed with a sunny and warm day after a period of chilly and rainy weather. Over 200 people attended the demonstration from all over the metropolitan area.

Joseph Lam, assisted on stage by chapter president Paula Tam, began the floral journey through five centuries started in old Kyoto. The story of Ikenobo ikebana’s evolution through the centuries unfolded as he demonstrated a historical array of flower arrangements – the classical, exemplified by tatehana, as stunning as the modern styles shoka and rikka shimputai. Intermingled with the story of his own journey in ikebana, Joseph’s demonstration illustrated how the language of Ikenobo ikebana has evolved.
